Books

  • Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love by Dr. Sue Johnson

    • Marriage:

      • The Divorce Remedy; The Proven 7-Step Program for Saving Your Marriage, by Michelle Weiner-Davis, 2002.

        • Therapist review: "This book is recommended to a person in a couple who is trying to save the marriage.  It is supportive of the work that you may be doing in Discernment Counseling.  I love this book because the author is very encouraging and gives advice on how to behave to help retain or regain your partner's interest in working on the marriage." -Carolyn Dehnbostel

      • Take Back Your Marriage; Sticking Together in a World That Pulls Us Apart, by William Doherty, 2013

        • Therapist review: "William Doherty is the head of the Couples on the Brink Project at the U of M, renowned therapist, professor, author, and marriage hero. Using his many experiences as a couple therapist, as well as his own lessons learned, wrote about the importance of commitment, joint effort, and traps to avoid in marriage.  He emphasized the importance of community support and marriage rituals in strengthening couples."- Carolyn Dehnbostel

      • The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert by John M. Gottmann, 1999.

        • Therapist review: "In his “Love Lab,” Gottmann studied couples and learned how to predict divorce.  His research brought a wealth of information to the field, including the “Four Horsemen”: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling.  It is a great read that includes a lot of fun quizzes and exercises that you can try with your honey." -Carolyn Dehnbostel

    • Parenting:

      • Positive Discipline A-Z; 1001 Solutions to Everyday Parenting Problems, by Jane Nelsen et al, 2007.

        • Therapist review: "I love this book.  The first 30 pages or so give a really good foundation to how to parent well, including natural and logical consequences and family meetings.  The rest of the book is specific recommendations for problems such as “lying” or “bedwetting” all in an A-Z format, so you can just flip to the issue that you want to read about."- Carolyn Dehnbostel

    • Finances:

      • The Total Money Makeover; A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, by Dave Ramsey, 2009.

        • "This is a good book to introduce you to Dave Ramsey's get out of debt plan.  I listened to it on audiobook, but be prepared to have pen and paper handy because you will want to take notes! Dave also created a curriculum called Financial Peace University, which is a 9-week class that you can take to get more support as you turn your financial worries into a confident plan for stability and growth."- Carolyn Dehnbostel

    • Sexuality:

      • The Sex Drive Solution for Women; Dr. Jen's Power Up Plan to Fire Up Your Libido, Jennifer Landa, 2012.

        • Therapist review: "Besides the silly cover which has a woman's bra hanging from the kitchen stove, I think this book does a nice job with education and treatment suggestions including lifestyle changes, supplements, herbs, and exercises. There is even a Libido Quiz which may help in pinpointing some of the issues with your sex drive.  Although I believe that some problems with low libido are indicative of the emotional intimacy in the relationship which can be dealt with in Emotionally Focused Therapy, Dr. Jen's book gives additional things to think about."- Carolyn Dehnbostel
