Intensive Therapy for Couples

An immersive experience that can help you focus on your relationship in a deep way.

Intensive Therapy for Couples

Sometimes when you are facing issues that strain your relationship with your partner, meeting once a week just seems “too slow.” Other times, you may feel stuck with weekly therapy or wish you could meet for a longer time to work on issues more deeply. One approach that may be very useful is intensive therapy for couples. This method offers a focused, immersive experience designed to address relationship problems more quickly and deeply than traditional weekly sessions.

Intensive therapy condenses the work of multiple traditional sessions into a shorter, more concentrated period. Instead of meeting once a week for 50 to 60 minutes, you engage in longer sessions over several consecutive days or a few weeks. These sessions can last from a few hours to a full day, depending on the therapist’s approach and your needs.

Couples therapy can sometimes feel slow or frustrating when progress is limited by time gaps between sessions. Sometimes, it seems like you are on the edge of a breakthrough, only to realize your hour is up. The goal of an intensive is to create a space where you can focus deeply on your relationship without having to stop just when you feel like something is happening. Intensive therapy can create momentum and allow you to work through issues more quickly. When you spend several hours together with your therapist, you can explore emotions and conflicts in real time, leading to insights and changes in your relationship. More rapid progress is possible by addressing core issues in more depth with your therapist providing immediate feedback and support.

The immersive nature of intensives can foster a deeper emotional connection with your partner. Couples often report feeling more understood and supported because the therapist can witness their interactions continuously, and intervene in difficult or painful moments. Without the distractions of daily life, you can fully focus on your relationship. This helps you stay present with difficult emotions and conversations, which can be harder to achieve in shorter, spaced-out sessions.

You might benefit from an intensive if:

- You’re facing an urgent relationship crisis and you want quick support.
- You’ve tried weekly therapy without much progress.
- You have busy schedules and are having problems committing to long-term weekly sessions.
- You’re ready to engage deeply and work hard on your relationship.
- You are seeking to rebuild trust after infidelity or trauma.

Intensives can have drawbacks too:

- Long sessions can bring up strong feelings that may feel emotionally overwhelming.
- Spending hours in therapy requires stamina and focus–it can be exhausting.
- Many problems require longer-term support beyond an Intensive. Partners who think they will be “done” after one are likely to be disappointed.
- Insurance companies do not cover intensive therapy. So you’ll have to pay out of pocket for the sessions.

To get the most from intensive therapy, you should:

- Set clear goals for what you want to achieve with your therapist.
- Plan for self-care before and after sessions.
- Plan for logistics like childcare or work time off.
- Keep an open mind about the process and outcomes.

Our therapists use Emotionally Focused Therapy as the basis of the intensive therapy process. It may be a very valuable tool in your relationship’s healing and growth. We offer intensives in Compassionate Communication (nonviolent communication) also.
